Mardi Larson, 612/683-3538 CRAY RESEARCH ANNOUNCES SUPPORT OF OSF'S DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT Early Access To DCE Available Now EAGAN, Minn., Nov. 10, 1993 -- Cray Research, Inc. announced today that it is supporting the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) 1.1, a set of technologies from Open Software Foundation (OSF) that enables distributed computing and distributed computing application development across multi-vendor systems. The initial product from Cray Research, the Cray DCE Toolkit, is available immediately, the company said. "Cray Research is committed to providing a high level of connectivity to our system and by supporting DCE, Cray Research systems will easily integrate into multi-vendor distributed environments," said Irene Qualters, vice president of software for Cray Research. "The DCE software is an emerging product that provides a complete set of technologies for distributed computing, including important security features. DCE allows users and application developers to take advantage of a wide variety of resources in heterogeneous networks in a simple, consistent way." OSF's DCE is layered software that resides between computers' operating systems and an application program. The software masks the physical complexity of the multi-vendor networked environment by enabling applications to be automatically segmented and executed on the system best suited for processing each segment. OSF's full suite of DCE software has two components: Core Services and Extended Services. Core Services include features like Remote Procedure Call (RPC), which distributes application execution, and Time Service, which synchronizes all computer clocks on the network. Extended Service includes the Distributed File System (DSF), which gives users transparent access to files stored on remote systems, regardless of their geographic location. Cray Research supercomputing systems are typically operated in a heterogeneous computing environment. They most often reside on a network and are accessed from a variety of workstations and personal computers and are called upon to interact with servers, mainframes, storage systems and other devices on the network. The Cray DCE Toolkit provides Cray Research supercomputer users early access to the DCE distributed computing environment and includes the client implementation of Core Services, Qualters said. "With the early access provided by the Cray DCE Toolkit, our users can use their Cray Research systems as a client when building or running a DCE application," she said, noting that the full suite of DCE software, including DFS, will be available in mid 1994. Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems. ###
